Shakoor Henson

Biography

Shakoor Henson is an active musician and teacher based in Kingston, Ontario. As a performer, he holds a Bachelor of Music degree and a Chamber Diploma from Wilfrid Laurier University. He has performed with the Wilfrid Laurier University Symphony Orchestra, the Kingston Symphony Orchestra, and the Ambrosia Quintet.

As a teacher, Shakoor Henson works with students of all ages and backgrounds, drawing on the Suzuki Method to build strong technical foundations while keeping lessons joyful and musical.

Shakoor also performs regularly with his sister Bibi Henson as a duo locally.

Teaching

I teach violin students of all ages and levels, from complete beginners to advanced players preparing for auditions and competitions.

My approach emphasizes developing a strong technical foundation, a practical approach to reading and ear training, and a holistic understanding of the violin and music. My teaching method draws from the pedagogy of Shinichi Suzuki, Ivan Galamian, and Demetrius Constantine Dounis.

Frequently Asked Questions

I welcome students starting around age 5 through adults of any age. It's never too late to start!

Yes — students should have their own instrument for daily practice. I'm happy to recommend local shops and online rentals for the right size.

For young children (under ~7), a parent or caregiver attending lessons is very helpful so they can support practice at home. Older students are welcome on their own.

Lessons take place at my studio in Kingston, Ontario.

Primarily classical, but I'm open to fiddle, pop, and other styles depending on the student's interests and goals.
